First week with E-P1...
Saturday, July 4, 2009 at 06:00PM I've had my PEN for 1 week now and prior to this I had a Canon 400d. The E-P1 is a fantastic camera that rekindles the fun and thrills of photography that I haven't felt since owning a medium format camera many years ago. Its not perfect (but what camera is) and its no replacement for a DSLR if you're into fast moving subjects that require very quick AF. But it is a superb photographic tool capable of outputting some truely excellent images that match DSLRs despite being in a compact body. I've been waiting for this type of camera for a long time and I can't imagine ever going back to a large model.
I have the FL-36 flash which works well. I might consider swapping it for the smaller FL-14 with off camera cord to save weight and space but I'd like to see some more examples of this first.
My one true disappointment with the camera is how badly the noise of the AF motor, button presses or zoom controls are picked up when in movie mode. If Olympus introduce a way to resolve this (either with an HDMI external mic or controls to reduce the power of the internal mics) then I'll be very happy. As it is I won't be focussing when capturing video (even manual focus is heard wiht the 14-42mm kit lens). Other lenses might be better but I can't justify spending £800ish on the Vario 14-140mm HD.
Due to my own skill I'm not getting the best out of the camera yet so apologies for the lack of many sample images. I'll just leave you with one, shot at iso 640, 1/6sec at f3.6 demonstrating how good the in built image stabilisation is.
