Tough light, and comparing the kit lenses.

Hello everyone,

I've uploaded more images to my E-P1 sample gallery from this evening.

I took out the Panasonic G1 + Lumix 14-54 kit lens, and the E-P1 + 17mm f2.8 pancake and 14-42mm kit lens for a comparison shooting landscapes.

I compared the G1 + Lumix 14-45 with the E-P1 + 17mm, with both cameras set to 17mm f5.6 at ISO 200, 1/800 sec shutter speed on a high contrast scene...

The G1 + Lumix 14-45 has less CA and is sharper than the 17mm f2.8.

The Olympus 14-42, however may have the edge on the Lumix - I'll have to test these against each other, but I'm very happy with the quality of the Olympus 14-42 on the E-P1. Here's an example :

Please post any questions/comments below.

Kind Regards

Brian

Does the CA in the 17mm look like lateral CA (increasing with increasing distance from the center) or longitudinal CA? Lateral CA would be correctable in post. It would be interesting to know if the EP-1 corrects lateral CA like the G1 does.

Hi David, I've double checked, and it's lateral CA... damned sharp in the centre!.

Have you been able to compare lens quality on uncompoensated Raw files? Those Panasonic-lenses are less than stellar if those raw.s are processed with 3rd party system that does not fix Barrel distortion and CA automatically.

Hi Brain, you state that the 17mm is less sharp then the panasonic lens, but that the olympus zoom is on par with the panasonic lens. What do you think is then the main benefit of the 17mm. Its size, its depth of field control? Could you post some examples?

Thanks, Bas

Great question Bas, I'll post on that in my next diary entry.
